And that was Just A Card Week!

Business, EventsKate Marsden

I know I know, it's been nearly a month since Just A Card Week but better late that never?!!

The week was overwhelming and wonderful in equal measure. It was all I could do to keep up with it at the time as it coincided with our annual open studios event, but keep up I did.

ACS_0363.jpg

Along with many others, I really enjoyed the 5 day Instagram challenge - seeing the number of people involved and reading their comments made me feel rather emotional! This little campaign we've been volunteering for for years actually means something to people and that was a really special feeling.

ACS_0456.JPG

Not only did Just A Card gain THOUSANDS of new followers that week but I'm sure many more exciting things will come from it for the campaign (Sarah keeps getting asked to go on the radio now so that's definitely a good thing!). The images here are mine from the week, but do head over here to see them all.

We have lots of brilliant new things planned for the autumn, including a bigger and better Indie Friday so do watch this space! In the meantime thank you so much to everyone who took part and continues to support the campaign - you made us all very happy indeed!

Open Studios - continues this weekend...

Art, Events, Exhibition, London, StudiosKate Marsden

The sun was most definitely shining on the first weekend of Carshalton Artists Open Studios! Despite competing with the football and a local music festival we still had a good time.

 Claire Chandler's gorgeous studio

Claire Chandler's gorgeous studio

We'll be back for more this coming weekend 30 June/1 July and Claire will be hosting a slient auction in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association - you can bid on all sorts of fab stuff - and I've donated a space on a lampshade making workshop.

I have a wide range of new items and old favourites available at the open studios, including a few bargains,  so do pop by and see us if you can! I'm popping up at Claire Chandler's studio - 133a Stanley Park Road, SM5 3JJ - we're stop 14 on a trail of 20 so there's plenty to see and do (and something for everyone!). See all the other artists and events here.

Open Studios - This Weekend!

Art, Events, Exhibition, London, Products, StudiosKate Marsden

We're nearly there! I've had such a busy couple of months and Carshalton Artists Open Studios has definitely come around very quickly this year... I'm looking forward to seeing lots of familiar and new faces this weekend and next!

I'm finally getting close to being fully prepared (sort of anyway!) and I thought I'd share some of the new things you can expect to see from me...

ACS_0468.jpeg

I will have three of my little zines available to purchase, including my new lavender coloured booklet about Wallington and Carshalton, which I've made especially for the event.

I also have new colour ways of some of my most popular prints and have restocked the Carshalton Ponds prints which sold out last year.

ACS_0466.jpeg

Prints will be availiable framed and unframed.

I've a new sign, and I have some unique one off monoprinted fabric panels for sale.

ACS_0465.jpg

In addition to this I will have all of my usual bits and bobs, including fabrics (and my brand new designs as well!).

IMG_6582 2.jpeg
IMG_6581 2.jpeg

Don't forget that I will also be a pick up point for Just A Card shop window stickers like the one show below. So if you have a shop or gallery based in London or the South East come and see me!

ACS_0459.jpg

Carshalton Artists Open Studios runs this weekend and next - 23/24 June and 30 June/1 July and locations will be open from 11-5 each day. I will be at stop 14 on the trail; 133a Stanley Park Road, SM5 3JJ with Claire Chandler and Marie Ratnam. For full details of all the artists involved head to the Carshalton Artists website.

The First Patchwork Workshop and Dates for the Autumn...

Craft, Events, London, Sewing, Textiles, WorkshopsKate Marsden

Last week I hosted my first English Paper Piecing patchwork workshop at Creative Happy London and it went really well. Here are some photos of the session...

ACS_0442.jpeg

As EPP is a slow, hand stitching technique, the aim was for each of the attendees to get started on their first piece of patchwork and go away with all the skills they need to continue with it on their own at home. People planned a range of items with their patchwork including cushions, pin cushions and of course quilts!

Just A Card Week!

Business, Events, InspirationKate Marsden

I'm so excited to share that next week (14-22 June) will be Just A Card Week. Those of us at Team Just A Card and all of our supporters will be shouting very loudly about the importance of supporting independents and shopping small with an Instagram challenge, daily social media tip blog posts and an amazing giveaway (which will be run by yours truly).

Head over to the Just A Card blog to find out more about the week!

While I was away in the States the other week, something else exciting happened...

ACS_0418.JPG

We launched our wonderful Just A Card pins (here I am modelling mine in Seattle) and they SOLD OUT in less than 48 hours! They're beautifully made and are a great way to shout quietly about the campaign (if that's more your thing!). To find out when they're back in stock head to the Just A Card website and join the mailing list.

ACS_0364.JPG

Looking forward to sharing all the Just A Card love next week!

Do remember that if you're after a Just A Card sticker for your shop window you can collect one from me at Carshalton Artists Open Studios on 23/24 June and 30 June/1 July. I'll be at stop 14 on the trail which you can find here.

Workshops this weekend!

You can use the fabrics provided or bring along your own... Book here.

Art, Ceramics, Drawing, Events, Exhibition, Painting, StudiosKate Marsden

Preparatinos for this year's Carshalton Artists Open Studios are in full swing and everyone is working hard to bring you all some fabulous new work. I thought I'd take this opportunity to whet your appetites for the end of next month with a reminder of some of the wonderful studios I've toured for the blog. All of the artists featured here will be opening again this year so do come and visit us on 23/24 June and 30 June/1 July!

Pop Art, Collage and Open Studios prep

Art, Events, Exhibition, StudiosKate Marsden

It's approaching that time of year again! Carshalton Artists Open Studios is only a matter of weeks away (so please cross your fingers for an improvement in the weather!) and preparations are in full swing.

I've been working on lots of new things, but one in particular is a little collage inspired by local artist Pauline Boty...

IMG_4865.jpg

Pauline was born in Carshalton in 1938 and went on to become a leading member of the British Pop Art movement. She died at the very young age of 28 and her work and influence had been pretty much forgotten until recently. In what would have been her 80th year, Carshalton Artists Open Studios are celebrating her work and legacy.

The exhibiting artists have been asked to produce A5 collages inspired by her work and they will be shown at local businesses during the event. Local schools will also be involved with the project, so hopefully the people of Carshalton will be very much aware of Pauline Boty's work by the end of the summer!

ACS_0173.jpg

My collage is actually a self portrait (this is me aged 17...) and combines digital print and monoprinted pieces. The colours are quite subdued by my usual standards!

Find out more about Pauline Boty here.

Carshalton Artists Open Studios runs over two weekends - 23/24 June and 30 June/1 July 2018. Information about all the artists and the trail map can be found on the website. Please also follow us on Instagram and Twitter!

English Paper Piecing Workshop

Craft, Events, London, Sewing, Textiles, WorkshopsKate Marsden

I'm excited to annouce that I have a new workshop coming up at Creative Happy London in Camberwell on Saturday 9 June. I'll be teaching the English Paper Piecing patchwork technique which is a really enjoyable hand stitching practice, suitable for complete beginners.

Patchwork 3.jpg

It's all about slow stitching and long term projects, but you'll come away with a little piece of finished patchwork, which you can either continue to add to and make a quilt from (mine took me two years though!) or turn into a smaller project for a quicker win. I'll also show you some other project ideas if it is a quicker result you're after!

Bookings are already coming in so do head over here to book your space.

Patchwork 4.jpeg

This is a good time to mention that I also have a workshop coming up next weekend (Sunday 22 April) at Love Art in Tooting. We'll be painting and making our own lampshades. This one will be really fun - no artistic skills are needed, just a willingness to have fun with fabric paint! You can book your space on this workshop here.

Isle of Dogs

Events, Exhibition, Inspiration, PhotographyKate Marsden

I do love a Wes Anderson film. The colours, the symmetry... Just over a week ago we went to see his new animation Isle of Dogs at the cinema (it's fab - go and see it - we all loved it and it held the little man's attention for the full 100 minutes!). I was then lucky enough to make it into town last Tuesday to see the exhibition of sets from the film (and now I love it even more!).

Sadly the exhibition has now finished, so if you didn't make it you'll have to live vicariously through this blog post! It was so popular though I think it'd be well worth doing a tour. Here are some of my favourite photos of the beautiful sets.

Things to look forward to in March

Art, Events, Exhibition, Inspiration, London, Shopping, TravelKate Marsden

It's nearly spring!!! Yes, really! Here are 10 good things coming up this month...

IMG_5076.jpg

1. Virginia Woolf: an exhibition inspired by her writings at Tate St Ives - Oh how I wish I lived closer to St Ives - I'd be visiting this exhibition in a heartbeat. I've been a fan of Virginia Woolf since I was a teenager (as evidenced recently by my illustration below).

2. A Journey Through Brutalism at RISE Gallery Croydon - one for all you concrete fans. This new exhibition at one of my local favourites opened last week.

3. Crafty Fox Market is going monthly! While I'm cutting down on selling events this year I see some more shopping in my future... the first one is this Saturday.

4. Spring blossom (goes without saying!).

5. I'll be running two lampshade workshops on Saturday 24th at Creative Happy London - you can choose from morning or afternoon slots. Only a few spaces left so get booking!

IMG_0656.jpg

6. The National Trust are running a series of walking tours in Croydon to accompany the RISE Gallery exhibition above - now taking bookings.

7. If you're up in Scotland, the wonderful Artists' Textiles exhibition which has been touring since it's appearance at London's Fashion & Textile Museum is open now at New Lanark.

8. Hot cross buns (mmmm).

9. If you're quick, there's still time to see the Bridget Riley exhibition in Mayfair (open until 10 March).

10. And if you're still feeling far too wintery, British Summer Time begins on Sunday 25th! Not long now...

Studio Tour - Adrienne Roberts

Art, Ceramics, Events, Exhibition, StudiosKate Marsden

We're well into February, and that means that Carshalton Artists Open Studios are creeping up on us again! We had such a brilliant time at the first event last year and I'm really excited about doing it all over again this summer.

You may recall that I wrote a short series of studio tour posts on the run up last year, and they were really popular (as everyone likes a nosey around a studio!), so here's my first for 2018.... A few months ago I popped to see Adrienne Roberts in her studio, set at the end of a garden which was beautiful even on a miserable wet day (so I can just imagine how lovely it will be in the summer) and here are the resulting photos.

Adrienne is a ceramicist, who mostly works with porcelain paper clay. Her delicate pieces are inspired by the natural world, and there are lots of fascinating little bits and bobs all over her enviably large studio. See more of Adrienne's work and find out all about her here. Adrienne's studio will be open for both weekends of Carshalton Artists Open Studios - 23/24 June and 30 June/1 July 2018.

Things to Look Forward to in February

Events, Exhibition, Inspiration, Month in the LifeKate Marsden

So I'm trying something new... for about 5 years now (yes 5 - quite ridiculous!) I've been starting each month by looking back on the last one. Last year in particular I found that a touch depressing (in a kind of ticking off the days until it ends sort of a way) so this year rather than going through the previous month, I'm going to list some things to look forward to in the new one! And here's my first stab at it...

ACS_0005.jpg

February can be a bit of a miserable month. It's still pretty dark, the weather is still rubbish, and summer is a long long way away... However it is getting lighter, and:

1. Pancakes!!!! Who doesn't like a pancake? Enjoy lots of pancakes with toppings of your choice on Shrove Tuesday (13 February).

2. Go and see the Elizabeth Friedlander exhibition at Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft - it's open now and I'm hoping to go this month.

3. I'm also hoping to go and look at some fab upholstery at the National Centre for Craft & Design.

IMG_1293.jpg

4. I have my first workshop of 2018 lined up on Satuday 24th - come and make a painted lampshade with me!

5. Valentines Day - can be good or bad depending on how you look at it, but increasingly it's about friends and family and doing nice things for people you care about rather than just the mushy stuff, and I think this has to be a good thing/excuse to do some crafting...

6. Joanne Payne (of Adventures & Tea Parties) is running a Colour My Everyday challenge on Instagram (it started on Monday but goes on until Sunday so there's still time to get involved/take in all the colour).

IMG_1804.jpg

6. It's still cold and dark enough to justify lighting the fire.

7. From 22-25 February you can visit Collect at the Saatchi Gallery - I found this really inspiring last year - be prepared for very high end craft.

8. The spring bulbs are starting to appear. I'm looking forward to the daffs and then my really blousy tulips in another couple of months.

9. The Modigliani exhibition continues at Tate Modern.

10. Oh, and if you really do hate February, it's a nice short month so payday (and March!) will be here soon!

What do you have planned? Anything I should add to my list?

The Just A Card/Top Drawer Experience!

EventsKate Marsden

As I mentioned in my post last Monday, the Just A Card team had the amazing opportunity to take our campaign to the Top Drawer trade fair at London Olympia. Here are a few shots from my day there on the Monday.

It's fair to say that we were all pretty tired afterwards, but we had a very successful event, handing out shop stickers and spreading the word far and wide! Head over to the Just A Card website and join our mailing list to be the first to find out about upcoming events and plans (and to see how you can support us too!). If you came along to say hello (and some of my blog readers did - hello!) thank you very much!

Just A Card at Top Drawer!

Events, ShoppingKate Marsden

When this post goes live it will be the Just A Card team's second day at Top Drawer in London! Back in the autumn we were given the amazing opportunity of a free stand (thanks to Top Drawer and The Greetings Card Association!) and printed.com offered to produce shop window stickers for us to hand out to promote the campaign.

For those of you who've somehow missed my involvement with Just A Card you can read about it here and meet the team here.

FullSizeRender-5.jpg

We have 2000 shop window stickers to give away and the plan is that they will appear in shops all over the country, raising the profile of the campaign with consumers. Hopefully they'll all be recognising the Just A Card logo very soon and parting with their small change!

FullSizeRender-6.jpg

If you're visiting Top Drawer please do come along and see us - I'll be there today (Monday) and the team will be there tomorrow too. It's a first opportunity for some of us in the team to meet each other, and to really talk to lots of people at once about the campaign, so we're rather excitied!

If you can't make it to Top Drawer but would like a sticker for your shop, keep an eye on the website for details of how to get hold of one after the event.

Come and see me Tonight! And on Saturday...

Events, London, ShoppingKate Marsden

My last two events for 2017 (and other than the Quilter's Fair at Farnham Maltings next month my last for quite some time!) are tonight and Saturday. I'll have a few bargains as I start to clear my stock of products (more info on this here) so it'll be a great opportunity to get those stocking fillers!

IMG_1972.jpg

Tonight - from 4-9pm - you can find me at the wonderful Geffrye Museum for the Crafty Fox Night Market. This is one of my favourite venues - a perfect stop off on the way home from work...

HOXTON SOCIAL.jpg

And on Saturday, it's another Crafty Fox but a new venue for me - Mercato Metropolitano in Elephant & Castle...

E&C SOCIAL 1.jpg

Sounds like you'll be able to get some great food at this one too!

IMG_1970.jpg

Get the full list of stalls at both events over on the Crafty Fox Market website and find all of my upcoming events (including workshops) here.

Come and see me in December!

Events, London, TextilesKate Marsden

As I mentioned in my post the other week (where I announced that I plan to stop making products and selling at markets - you can read more about my decision here) I mentioned that I have a couple of events lined up so I plan to go out with a bang!

Just two markets in December and as only seems fitting they're both from my favourites, Crafty Fox! The night market at the Geffrye Museum was one of my most successful single day events last year (and it's only a few hours long!) so I'll be back there on Thursday 14 December...

HOXTON SOCIAL.jpg

Then two days later I'll be at a new venue in Elephant & Castle - Mercato Metropolitano...

E&C SOCIAL 1.jpg

This one might be your last chance to get hold of my notebooks, cushions and other products, depending on stock levels - I will let you know if they're running low beforehand so you know what to expect!

In the New Year I'll be at Farnham Maltings again on Sunday 14 January at their Quilting Fabric Sale - here I'll have discounted fabrics (all kinds not just my own) and anything I have left in the way of products after Christmas. So a date for your diary if you're after fabric!

Getting Organised for Christmas...

Events, ProductsKate Marsden

For us small business owners, Christmas is never that far from our minds (unfortunately - I do love it but not all year round!), but now that I'm actually starting to think about it from the point of view of buying cards and gifts myself I thought I'd share some new things I've added to the shop!

IMG_0911.jpg

After the success of my Christmas cards last year, I've decided to go for it again! This year's design is a festive take on my chairs and plants patterns and is inspired by the 1950's room at the Geffrye Museum when it's decorated for Christmas. They are available here and in my Etsy shop.

Made By Mrs M Gift Wrap A3.jpg

And, exclusively to my Etsy shop, I've also put together a bumper download bundle. Last year I sold greetings card downloads but this year I've put a whole bundle together! There's the cards, plus giftwrap and bunting - so you can coordinate! You can get hold of the bundle here.

IMG_1592.jpg

I'll have a few pre-printed (and cut) sets of the bunting with me at the Village Haberdashery Maker's Market this coming Sunday (12 November) as well if you fancy saving yourself some prep time!

Coming Up in November!

Craft, Events, Inspiration, Sewing, Textiles, WorkshopsKate Marsden

The run down to Christmas is approaching fast! Lots of things coming up to get you in the festive mood this month...

Makers Market Logo.jpg

My first market of the season will be on Sunday 12 November at the Village Haberdashery in West Hampstead - they're showcasing two makers each Sunday up until Christmas. Come along, start your shopping and take a look at this beautiful shop if you haven't been before!

Kate Marsden.jpg

Workshop wise, I have two lampshade workshops lined up - the first is THIS SATURDAY (and bookings close tomorrow so quick!!) - this is my popular 20cm diameter drum shade workshop as seen above and below and will be running once again in Camberwell at Creative Happy London.

Then if you'd like something a little different we'll be making BIG lampshades at Dotty's Teahouse in Carshalton on Tuesday 28 November - also booking now.

IMG_0656.jpg

Then on Saturday 11 November come along and start making your own Christmas presents with me at Creative Happy London - we'll be making lavender bags or masks using a range of fabrics - suitable for all levels.

Getting Inky at the Knitting & Stitching Show

Craft, Events, Inspiration, TextilesKate Marsden

I had a fab time at the Knitting & Stitching Show last week, and for the first time ever I arrived before the doors opened! By the way I'd recommend you do this as it was nice and quiet at 10am... Anyway, I didn't arrive early because I'm a morning person; I'd booked myself on a workshop!

IMG_1138.jpeg

So by 10.30am I was up to my elbows in black acryclic paint! I joined a workshop led by Nicole Line who taught us monoprinting and stamping with Gelli Plates. A new technique for me and a lot messier than I'm used to (which was a good thing!) - I'm now off to get my hands on a Gelli Plate as it was really good fun and I'd like to experiment more.

The best of the prints have made it onto my studio wall

The best of the prints have made it onto my studio wall

After a clean up it was time to shop... You may recall that a couple of years ago I started work on a needlepoint cushion from Pompom Designs (which I've finished and I plan to blog about - promise!), well after a few months without needlepoint I felt the urge to do another - the first one only took a year after all... So I bought the Kumo Cushion Kit and started it as soon as I got home!

IMG_1150.jpg

I had my usual sweep around the textile galleries - I have to say that my planning was poor this year and I wandered around in a very ad hoc manner - not recommended - I'm sure I missed things, but a couple of highlights were Rachael Howard, Diana Harrison and the winning quilts from the Festival of Quilts.

Now off to finish my work as quickly as possible so I can sneak in a little more needlepoint before the school run...
