The World of Charles and Ray Eames

Architecture, Exhibition, London, Reviewmadebymrsm

I've long been an admirer of the work of Charles and Ray Eames, so I was really excited to hear that there was to be a retrospective at the Barbican Centre, and I visited a couple of weeks ago (IMAGE CREDITS: SEE END OF POST).

The exhibition is extensive and a feast for the eyes of fans of mid-century design - enhanced by the setting in the Barbican Art Gallery. It charts the Eameses careers from designing splints for the military to large scale exhibitions (with plenty of chairs in between!). I loved looking at the prototype chairs and room sets which were particularly inspiring.

The Eameses produced a wide range of work - stunning architecture and the furniture we all know about, alongside painting, drawing, product design, film, sculpture, photography and more - all of which are covered.

The exhibition is huge (with over 380 works) and it's well worth setting aside a couple of hours to take it all in properly (my entrance ticket was valid all day so if it's too much you could always pop out for lunch and come back later!). The gift shop is rather wonderful too...
