When I first spotted the free gift with this month's Mollie Makes magazine I had an idea. Now you know that I don't like to follow a pattern...

The kit is for a cross stitch brooch and pendant set, and this is what you get...

Two wooden bases (one with a hole in for the pendant and the other for the brooch)

A selection of embroidery threads

A chain and jump ring for the pendant and a brooch back for the brooch (the little brown envelope contains a needle).

When I saw the kit I immediately thought of the gorgeous work of Ella Robinson - I've had this postcard of hers for a while...

So here's my very much simplified take. Instead of cross stitching, I wrapped the threads over the outer edges of the bases several times (the holes aren't huge so I was limited to 3 or 4 times through each).

I started with the orange thread and worked around each of them gradually increasing the size of the stitches. The pendant is finished by adding the chain (through the jump ring which can be squeezed together with a pair of pliers) and the brooch is finished by glueing the back on - I glued it at the correct angle to ensure that they match one another if worn together.

This was a really really quick little project and great fun to do!
